SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) is the signaling standard most VoIP systems use to set up and end calls. A SIP trunk is a connection between your phone system, such as a PBX or a contact center platform, and a voice carrier, carried over an IP network instead of physical phone lines.
What defines a SIP trunk:
- Channels: the number of simultaneous calls it can carry
- Numbers: the DID numbers routed to it for inbound calls
- Authentication: either by fixed IP address or by registration with a username and password
- Codecs: the audio formats both sides agree on, such as G.711 or G.729
SIP trunks have replaced ISDN lines in most businesses, because capacity can be added quickly and calls can be routed to any site with an internet connection. Call quality depends on the network between the two ends, so bandwidth, latency and jitter matter.
In OVOKY, phone numbers can be routed to a softphone or SIP trunk, to OVOKY inbound campaigns or to your own PBX by IP, and bulk numbers can be sent to a PBX in bulk.
